Let’s talk hops!

One of the darlings of the beer world, hops play a significant role in all of our beers. Yes, hops provide bitterness, but they also contribute flavor and aroma, help to keep beer fresh for a longer period of time, and help beer retain its foam (also called head or collar.)

The flavor and aroma from hops vary largely depending on the variety of hop, and boy is it a wide spectrum. A few examples of flavor/aroma hops can impart include:

•General fruity flavors (like apricot, black currant, cherry, grape, pear)

•Citrus flavors (grapefruit, lemon, lime, marmalade, mandarin)

•Tropical flavors (lychee, papaya, passion fruit, pineapple, coconut)

•Floral flavors (chamomile, jasmine, lavender, rose)

•Earthy/woody flavors (cedar, grass, hay, leather, oak, pine)

•Herbal flavors (basil, green tea, mint, juniper, oregano)

•Spice flavors (pepper, clove, anise, curry, ginger, licorice, ginger)

•Candy-like flavors (caramel, honey, molasses, vanilla)

If you’re curious about which hops are associated with a specific flavor, send us message! We’re hoppy to be a resource. 😉
